From Night Owl to Early Bird: A Step by Step Plan

There’s a night owl in my house and it’s not me! It’s my 8 year old daughter Lola! When the other 3 of us are winding down for the evening Lola is just coming alive. Ready to whirl and twirl and do flips and gymnastics on the bed! Of course with this comes the fact that she abhors getting up early and can easily sleep until 11am if given the opportunity. I’m wondering what it will be like when she’s a teenager since most teens like to sleep late anyway! Lord, help me! Lola has been like this for as long as I can remember. Even as a baby. But why? According to Science Alert the answer may be written in your DNA. A study of nearly 90,000 people who had their genomes sequenced by the consumer genetics company 23andMe has identified 15 versions of genes that are linked to reports of being an early or a late riser. Most living things, including people, live by natural 24-hour cycles called circadian rhythms. These internal ‘clocks’ determine whether you have …

A 30 Day Minimalism Challenge: Should You Try It?

What is minimalism? It’s not just a fashion or furniture style. Minimalism is the is the intentional promotion of the things we most value  and the removal of everything that distracts us from it. It’s a way to escape the excesses of the world around us — the excesses of consumerism, material possessions, clutter, having too much to do, too much debt, too many distractions, too much noise. But too little meaning. Minimalism is a way of eschewing the non-essential in order to focus on what’s truly important, what gives our lives meaning, what gives us joy and value. In simple terms, minimalism is decluttering your life! Both physical and emotional. It doesn’t have to be a complete change of your life as you know it, but rather a simplyfying. Isn’t that a great quote! I am quite often feeling a little disorganized and like I am always cleaning up. I think I’m just moving the same crap around and around 😆 There’s clutter here, there’s clutter there. Where can I put this? I need …

A Unicorn Painting Party for Girls

A couple of weeks ago was my daughter Lola’s 8th birthday. She wanted a unicron themed party so that’s what she got! Well, originally we were just going to do a mobile painting party. You know, the kind that come to you. Lightbulb! We can do both! A unicorn painting party!   I reached out to Vivian at My Picqasso. We are both members of Women Helping Women to Network here in Houston. Vivian drafted a beautiful unicorn painting suitable for 8 – 12 year old girls abilities and the rest was up to me. There are definitley other bloggers out there that are craftier than me, throw pretty awesome parties, and have great blog posts about them! I think that I am only “averagely crafty”. While I do not claim to be a great party thrower, I do think that I do pretty good most times 😉 and would love to share with you how our unicorn party came out. I went online to search for unicorn horn headbands for all the girls. Most …

Around Town: Houston Mac and Cheese Festival!

Do some extra workouts, put your stretchy pants on, and get your tickets now for the Houston Mac and Cheese Festival taking place Saturday, April 15th at Silver Street Studios in the Sawyer Heights District! So, you may or may not know that I am gluten sensitive and doing my best to live a gluten free life. But, man do I miss mac and cheese! And mac and cheese is one of those things you just can’t get away from when you have kids at home! They probably want mac and cheese twice and week (Annie’s Organic of course) and it takes every bit of my strength to not take just one bite of that gooey goodness when I prepare it for them. All of that aside, Houston is about to host it’s first ever Mac and Cheese festival at Silver Street Studios on April 15th and I am hoping that they will have some gluten free offerings. Nonetheless, I wanted to let you, our readers, know about it. There will be over two dozen …

Random Acts of Kindness Week: Let’s All Spread Some Kindness Around!

Random Acts of Kindness Week (February 12 – 18) is here, and Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17) is quickly approaching! I think that our society could really use more kindness in it, don’t you? While we should always be kind, this week is a great reminder to do nice things for others. It is also a great time to get the kids involved in acts of kindness. I just signed up at the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. They have daily ideas and challenges to spread kindness! You can keep track of all your “kindness activities” and see the impact we as a society are making together. You should check it out! Sounds like fun! I did do one random act of kindness this morning already! I ordered Instacart for groceries because my youngest is home with the flu. When my Instacart lady came in with the groceries she noticed all the Girl Scout cookies that I have on the dining room table right now (waiting to get delivered). She said she loved …

Gift Ideas for Your Galentine!

Yes, it’s actually Valentine’s Day! But that doesn’t mean we can’t show a little love to the “girlfriends” in our lives – our Galentines! Besides, our girlfriends mean a lot to us! Do they not? In my 40’s I find that my girlfriends mean even more to me now than they did in my 30’s. I guess because in my 30’s I was birthing little people and caught up in diapers and bottles! In my 20’s of course my girlfriends meant a lot, but in a different way…The kind of “thanks for getting me away from that creepy guy at the club and driving my ass home” kind of way 🙄 Don’t get me wrong, some of these gals are still some of my closest friends and always will be! I’m pretty sure that as the years pass from here on out my girlfriends will continue to hold a very special and important place in my life. After all, our kiddos are getting older, wrinkles are starting to appear, and the dreaded menopause is looming …

What is Your Rising Sign and How Does It Affect Your Personality?

We all know what our astrological sign is…I’m a Capricorn! But, what about your rising sign? My rising sign is Cancer. What does that mean and why would you want to know? Well, one’s rising sign is a very important piece of your astrological profile. The other day Bridgette and I  were talking and I mentioned that I felt that she and I shared a few similar qualities and I went on to explain the concept of rising signs. Bridgette is a Cancer, and as I said, I am a Capricorn. Very different sun signs. Actually, we are astrological opposites! But, Bridgette and I have discovered over the course of our friendship that we do have some similar qualities –  among other things, we both love being at home; we both crave and need alone time; we both feel affects on our mood based on the weather and the moon; we are both quite sentimental and sensitive. I’m guessing that this is due to the fact that my rising sign is Cancer, the same as …
